Apple makes switch to Intel chips

Apple has confirmed that it is dropping IBM chips from its Mac computers in favour of those made by Intel. The first Apple computers with the Intel chips onboard will be on the market by this time next year."We think Intel's technology will help us create the best personal computers for the next 10 years," Steve Jobs, the head of Apple, said. The move is being seen as a big gamble for Apple strategy, and a boost to Intel at the expense of IBM.It ends a decade-long relationship between Apple and IBM, which have recently wrangled over supply problems.

Canon PowerShot SD1000 7.1MP Digital Camera DetailsCanon looked to the very first ELPH for inspiration when designing the PowerShot SD1000 Digital ELPH, and came up with a quintessential iteration of the icon: slim, clean-lined and fully flat. Inside, the SD1000 Digital ELPH looks only to the future: 7.1 megapixels, a 3x optical zoom and advanced DIGIC III ensure top quality images, while focus is fast and sharp and red-eye is automatically corrected. The large and more colorful LCD screen now has a tough, anti-reflective coating that makes it a

Intel Mac mini lacks dedicated graphics hardware

At a special event in Cupertino today, Apple announced new Mac minis running on Intel Core Solo and Core Duo processors, making the machine 2.5x to 3x faster than the G4 models they replaced (according to Apple). Aside from the updated processor specifications, the new Mac mini features an integrated graphics chipset--called the Intel GMA950 graphics processor--which shares a minimum of 80MB of the system's 512MB of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM. Gamers generally loath integrated graphics: integrated chips share RAM with the system, making for a slower computer and a bad GPU (system RAM is much slower than dedicated VRAM). This is the first machine Apple has released without a dedicated graphics card. Previously the Mac mini featured a Radeon 9200 with 32 64MB of dedicated VRAM - not a brilliant chip, but one that doesn't rely on drawing RAM from the system. While the Mac mini was never designed to be a gaming machine, it was intended to draw PC owners into buying a second, cheap BYODKM (bring your own display, keyboard and mouse) Macintosh. By including crippled graphics hardware (possibly as part of a price-reduced deal with Intel) Apple has ignored a potential market of casual PC gamers that would have picked up a Mac mini had it included a capable graphics chipset. With ATI and NVIDIA offering an array of outstanding Mobile chipsets (that fit into the Mac mini's low-power/small-size design ethos) we see little reason for this step backwards

Video games have come a long way from joystick controllers and a little ball bouncing around the screen. I remember being amazed when you could shoot at the TV with Duck Hunt for Nintendo. I was even more impressed when Nintendo developed a console that enabled you to control the game with your motions. Wii is one of a kind and has entertainingly unique games. Check out our list of the top searched Wii games. After years of sitting and playing video games, it is time to get your butt off the couch. There is a game for everyone, even grandma.Sports enthusiasts will love Wii Sports, which is a large collection of sports games. Innovative motion controllers let you play like you are actually holding sporting equipment. Though you play in your living room, it feels like you are at a baseball diamond, golf course, bowling alley, tennis court or other sporting arena. You can also test your athleticism with Wii Fit, a game that measures your balance, strength and more. You can even do yoga.Play like a rock star with one of the music games. You can jam out like you are playing real instruments with games like Guitar Hero or Rock Band. Maybe there is a little Jimi Hendrix hidden in you.You don't have to go to a dance club to show off your moves. Inspired by the popular TV show, Wii Dancing With the Stars will have you doing the cha-cha until the 'Wii' hours of the morning.

SAN FRANCISCO--Intel on Wednesday showed off its living room PC of the future--and it looks a lot like the Mac Mini.

As part of a speech at the Intel Developer Forum here, Vice President Don MacDonald demonstrated several concept PCs, including the Sleek Concept Entertainment PC--a square, metallic-colored device that was immediately reminiscent of the desktop computer Apple Computer introduced earlier this year. It's unlikely that Intel itself would build such a device. The chipmaker often uses its twice-yearly developer events to try to spur creativity among computer makers. Past efforts have seen PCs twisted into all sorts of shapes and even embedded in an Ottoman foot rest.An Apple representative declined to comment on Intel's concept PC.Thus far, the concept PC is just a piece of plastic, literally, although its design showed a clock display and optical drive in front, with ports such as USB, optical audio and FireWire in the back. Most design efforts from computer makers to date have been focused on making entertainment-oriented PCs that look less like PCs and more like the kinds of electronics people have in the living room, such as stereos or DVD players. Gateway put out such a PC in the past, and HP has a current model, as do several niche PC makers

Thoughts on the Asus N10J mini-notebook

Back in September we covered Asus’s N10J, the 10-inch not-a-netbook. As you might recall, this computer runs an Atom processor and resembles a netbook in almost every way, but packs an extra punch: NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS graphics. It also sells for $679, but past that it’s a netbook.Click to enlarge - full gallery belowThe system has been out for a while now, but it’s still relevant as we really haven’t seen anything come up directly against it. I spent a few weeks with it and wanted to lay down some thoughts…A quick look at the specs reveals that the N10J is more or less a pumped-up version of the Eee PC 1000H. It has a 10.2-inch display, Intel’s Atom N270 processor, b/g WiFi, 160GB of storage, 1GB RAM, and Windows XP. The higher end model (currently $799 at NewEgg) moves to a 320GB disk and 2GB RAM. Of course, the NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS graphics is the big feature. The components are not the whole picture though–the N10J has features not typically found on a netbook that will appeal to more demanding users. These include not only the graphics, but HDMI, a wireless On/Off switch, and an ExpressCard slot. There is also a fingerprint reader. These all help justify the price and to set the N10J apart from your average netbook. The graphics are switchable, meaning that using a hardware switch you can toggle between discrete and integrated modes. This means you can do graphically-intensive work and then switch when you want to save battery life. The downside of this is that a reboot is required to put the change into effect
